چکیده
Indeed, these symmetries differ from the Lie derivative only by a gauge transformation and are often called improved diffeomorphisms @1#. If the only symmetries of the ChernSimons action are the diffeomorphisms ~3! and the gauge transformations ~2!, then we shall say that there is no accidental gauge symmetry. How this translates into an algebraic condition on ga1•••an11 will be described precisely below.

The local degrees of freedom of higher dimensional pure Chern-Simons theories
The canonical structure of higher dimensional pure Chern-Simons theories is analysed. It is shown that these theories have generically a non-vanishing number of local degrees of freedom, even though they are obtained by means of a topological construction. This number of local degrees of freedom is computed as a function of the spacetime dimension and the dimension of the gauge group.
متن کاملSchwarz Type Topological Quantum Field Theories
Topological quantum field theories (TQFT) provide powerful tools to probe topology of manifolds, specifically in low dimensions[1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. This is achieved by incorporating very large gauge symmetries in the theory which lead to gauge invariant sectors with only topological degrees of freedom. These theories are of two types: (a) Schwarz type or Chern-Simons type and (b) Witten type or Coh...
متن کاملOn the Doubling Phenomenon in Lattice Chern - Simons Theories ∗
We analyse the pure Chern-Simons theory on an Euclidean infinite lattice. We point out that, as a consequence of its symmetries, the Chern-Simons theory does not have an integrable kernel. Due to the linearity of the action in the derivatives, the situation is very similar to the one arising in the lattice formulation of fermionic theories. Doubling of bosonic degrees of freedom is removed by a...
متن کاملThe Statistical Mechanics of the Three-Dimensional Euclidean Black Hole
In its formulation as a Chern-Simons theory, threedimensional general relativity induces a Wess-Zumino-Witten action on spatial boundaries. Treating the horizon of the three-dimensional Euclidean black hole as a boundary, I count the states of the resulting WZW model, and show that they yield the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The relevant states can be understood as “would-be gauge” degre...
متن کاملNon-analyticities in Three-dimensional Gauge Theories
Quantum fluctuations generate in three-dimensional gauge theories not only radiative corrections to the Chern-Simons coupling but also non-analytic terms in the effective action. We review the role of those terms in gauge theories with massless fermions and Chern-Simons theories. The explicit form of non-analytic terms turns out to be dependent on the regularization scheme and in consequence th...
